RYE POTTERY’S CANTERBURY TALES

The Pilgrims

Our very first pilgrim was The Wife of Bath: who had five husbands,  all at the Church door, designed by Gordon Davies in the 1970′s she was joined by the first Tony Bennett  figure – The Knight; a true, a perfect gentle knight, with his son The Squire: who slept as little as the nightingale, and The Yeoman, his servant: His arrows never drooped their feathers low. Then comes The Dr of Physic: No one could talk as well as he did /on points of medicine and surgery. Riding with him are The Merchant: who had so set his wits to work, no one knew he was in debt. The Franklin: who lived for pleasure and had always done and The Manciple: who was never rash in buying victuals whether on credit or for cash. The Cook too,was in their party: he stood alone for boiling chicken with a marrow bone. Also The Skipper: he sent his prisoners home, they walked the plank. The Reeve joined them: he was old and choleric and thin and had his friend The Miller with him: A wrangler and buffoon, he had a store of tavern stories, filthy in the main.
