The Rye Nativity
figures have evolved over several years, we originally
asked Gordon Davies to design the Mary & Joseph
figures for our American customers. We later found however,
that there was considerable interest in the group here
in England and that we were being asked to add to the
range. Gordon then designed the Three Wise Men
and later the Three Shepherds. A set was taken
out to Bethlehem to mark the Millennium by the then
Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey.
Gordon Davies (born 1926)
served in the Highland Light Infantry during the War,finally
coming out in 1948 to attend Camberwell Art School
and the Royal College of Art.
A true Renaissance man,
Gordon is able to use his artistic creativity in any
decorative medium from illustrations for House &
Garden for more than thirty years to shell grottoes
in Ireland. Botanical sketches in fine detail led him
towards wall paper designs for Shand Kydd and Sanderson,
whilst finding he also enjoyed the challenge of three
dimensional work, he started producing china objects
with exotic subjects for Malletts, and later in the
form of special commissions for Colefax & Fowler. |
