Our 17th century technique creates a timeless effect suitable for kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces – traditional or modern. We even like them decorating the walls of a hallway or stairwell. Choose from one of our modern mix and match patterns or classic English country house designs – Flowers, Dragonflies, Fruit or Corners. All our tiles are painted to order and we can colour match to interior schemes, creating “palette tiles” from fabrics, wall papers and paints. Click the images below to see a host of examples of our work. Prices range from £15 – £28 per tile excluding carriage. We reckon less is more quite often, so when looking at our prices per sq metre remember that most of these hand painted designs can be interspersed with matching plain tiles which lowers the overall cost. Rye Pottery’s hand-painted figures based on the pilgrims from Chaucer’s renowned Canterbury Tales. The driving design influences for this collection are Neville Coghill’s translation of Chaucer’s original text and the few illustrations of the Pilgrims shown in the Ellesmere Manuscript. The colour palette centers on Cobalt Blue, Terracotta, earthy Browns & a soft Green. Though we do say so ourselves these are the perfect gift for Chaucer fans or medieval literature buffs. As a Sussex-based firm with a strong medieval following we feel a natural affinity with the story of William the Conqueror & 1066 The Battle of Hastings. Creatively, this ongoing collection is inspired by both the real 1066 story and the Bayeux Tapestry itself. There are now 5 characters in the series, including almost the only woman featured and the latest is Bishop Odo, Earl of Kent and Bishop of Bayeux. Technically these are some of the most complex and ambitious figures we produce. The colour palette is designed to evoke the early middle ages, dominated by Coral, Tan, Chestnut Brown, & a Smoky Grey that brings the intricate hand-painted armour to life. This is an ongoing series with new figures in the pipeline. These are often a popular gift for English lit and medieval history buffs. We know you know but… Because we rely on the skills and talents of real live human beings, every piece is handmade and unique. (We don’t employ small children and have few machines here, well one or two made by the Victorians and the odd computer). So each product is made and decorated individually by hand and will vary somewhat in size, shape, colours and design. Many pieces will have some tiny “imperfections” but that’s integral to the complex technique we use. Our customers tell us this is part to the charm . We strive to ensure our photos give you the best possible idea of the detail and palette for each piece, but they can only be representative, not least because in this day and age different computers display images differently. We’re very proud of the pieces we produce and would like you to find shopping with us an enjoyable experience. We’re a third-generation family firm and we mind if you’re not happy. So if you have any questions, suggestions or problems please call us on +44 (0)1797 223038 or email sales@ryepottery.co.uk.
