Edith the Fair or Edith Swan Neck as she is often called, is one of the very few women thought to be depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry or to feature in the 1066 story at all for that matter. Thought to be Harold’s first and common law wife there are many myths and stories around this powerful Anglo Saxon woman.

Our Battle of Hastings Collection has been conceived to mirror the narrative style of the Bayeux Tapestry, telling the story of one of the country’s most famous battles through a series of figures and vignettes. The palette is also tightly controlled and focuses on colours similar to those in the Bayeux Tapestry itself, so comprises Chestnut Brown, Russet, soft Charcoal Grey, Dark Green, Coral and Black.

William the Conqueror leads our 1066 Bayeux Tapestry-inspired series.

Do take a look at the incredibly intricate hand-painted detail of William’s classic Norman armour, which takes our decorators ages to learn and even longer to perfect on each piece. This is as painstaking to paint as it is to make – almost.

Newest in the 1066 Bayeux Tapestry Collection is Bishop Odo – former, some say tyrannical, Earl of Kent & Bishop of Bayeux, France.

Widely considered the most likely candidate to have commissioned the Tapestry, Odo was William’s half brother & a key strategist in the Battle itself. He later ruled England when William returned home to France.

The colour palette is designed to tie-in with the rest of the Series but there are decorative flourishes to add breadth & depth. In technical terms he’s one of the most complex & intricate pieces we’ve made, with almost 20 hand-made stages to bring him to life.

Odo is the 5th figure in this series & is modelled by Tony Bennett with decoration design by the Rye Design Team.
