These tiny things of beauty are hand-made using an enormous Edwardian shaping machine and then decorated by our skilled team using freehand brushwork.

At just over 5cm tall & 5cm wide the small size makes them particularly tricky to paint.

The team typically place them on a series of wooden blocks to get them as high up as they can. They are then pulled to the very edge of the block to allow the stripe to be painted right to the bottom.

Featuring spring-like Flamingo Pink, Sun Yellow and Blue Green these pintrays are carefully hand made and then decorated using freehand brushwork with a gentle but intricate top layer of Sgraffito.

Displayed here with Cadbury’s Mini Eggs, these are a good size for things like olives or butter and also make a great spoon rest or trinket dish.

Come to think of it even used teabags would look pretty using this on the worktop!

Together we re-imagined a little known 1950s pattern, which was originally inspired by the weathered wooden groynes on the pebble beaches, into a bold new hand-painted colourway. Click on the pics to the left to see the pattern in more detail.

The collaboration was designed to accompany a Turner exhibition – Beyond Form: Lines of Abstraction, 1950-1970, which focused on abstraction in a post-WWII period.

Our new surface decoration features raw, earthy tonal shifts, layered lines and sgraffito, with the colours taking inspiration from the exhibition’s title and abstract markings from key pieces within it, as well as the Rye Pottery archive and our shared coastal geography.
