Mrs Maria Fitzherbert
Rye Pottery’s Mrs Maria Fitzherbert, the secret, and at the time illegal, Roman Catholic wife of the Prince Regent.
Inspired by images from the renowned Rowlandson cartoon, our figures depicting Mrs Fitzherbert and the Prince Regent were originally commissioned for the Brighton Pavilion,
These are two of our most colourful pieces and we’re particularly pleased to be able to celebrate this extravagant, controversial but important artistic patron and his partner who both have such strong connections with Sussex.
The painted detail on this piece is wonderful, not least her hair, the feathers of the decadent hat and her luxurious fur muff. The spirit of the original cartoons and reported antics of Mrs Fitz and her “Prinny” are all captured in this striking but fun tribute to one of Sussex’s most notorious couples. It’s also a fabulous reflection of the sense of humour ( we call it a lack of po face) that we hope is present in all our work.
Originally modelled by sculptor and ceramicist Neal French. Click here to see her partner the Prince Regent, who later went on to become King George IV.
