The Yeoman £125

The Yeoman

The Yeoman, servant to The Knight, always seems to us to be one of the characters Chaucer actually liked.  A real man with a real job, ready to defend and follow his master – The Knight – at any cost.

The detail in this figure is extremely important to show his action character credentials; his sword, bow & arrows and his shield are all carefully delineated against his soft green tunic and russet leather head gear.  Note too, that unlike all the other Pilgrims he is riding in leather gauntlets.

This Yeoman wore a coat and hood of green,

And peacock feathered arrows bright and keen.

His arrows never drooped their feathers low –

And in his hands he bore a mighty bow.

He was a proper forester I guess.

Chaucer mentions the specific Guilds in his prologue, and when we first introduced a generic Guildsman and his Wife we realised there was huge scope for us to work with each of the named Guilds allowing us an exciting choice of costume especially for the wives. As it says in the Prologue: They had the capital and revenue,/Besides their wives declared it was their due./And if they did not think so, then they ought;/To be called Madam is a glorious thought.

Besides their wives declared it was their due,

And if they did not think so then they ought:

To be called Madam is a glorious thought.

The Carpetmaker’s Wife sports a soft Cobalt blue dress with a delicate repeat motif teamed with a flattering coral collar. She hasgenerously patterned coral cuffs to complement her husband’s wide sleeves.

Her headdress is one of the most complicated in our Canterbury Tales range, allowing her carefully netted hair to be shown as well as her veil, but also allowing our talented painting team to show off their skills in the minutest detail.

With his spirited horse and his spurs clearly in use, The Carpetmaker wears a richly patterned cobalt blue tunic with a fine, wide cuff detail. He also sports another of our favourite hats, which was designed after very brief visit to a museum in Perugia, Italy. We discovered a series of medieval tapestries there and were so inspired with new ideas that we filled up an entire sketchbook with hasty scribbles.

Each figure in the Canterbury Tales range is designed to work as a standalone figure or as part of a wider collection, but alongside the other guildsmen and their partners The Carpetmaker was conceived to pair perfectly with his Wife who you can see if you click here so there are a series of subtle decoration details that echo between the couple.

The Reeve £125

The Reeve

Probably not one of the most charming characters but without doubt a good business head; once again The Reeve proves the timeless  quality in Chaucer’s writing,  every Pilgrim can still be recognised today over 600 years later.

There is wonderful detail on the Reeve, intricate stripes on his tunic that are very tricky to paint, as well as beautifully detailed keys.

The Reeve was old and choleric and thin;

His beard was shaven closely to the skin.

He kept his bins and garners very trim;

No auditors could gain a point on him.

No bailiff, serf or herdsman dared to kick,

He knew their dodges, knew their every trick.

The Nun prioress is the only Female religious character we have included in our range of Canterbury Pilgrims.

He therefore had a special love of gold.

The Doctor is one of the best selling Pilgrims despite his tight book keeping habit.  Shown with his medicinal  leech bottle and riding a modestly harnessed horse, he wears a soft terracotta robe and a Sherwood green hood.

The noble character of the ‘parfit gentil Knight’ is well displayed both in his powerful horse and his ornately decorated cobalt tunic with rather splendid turban-style head gear.

There was a Knight, a most distinguished man,

Who from the day on which he first began

to ride abroad had followed chivalry,

Truth, honour, generousness and courtesy,

In all his life to any; comes what might;

Besides their wives declared it was their due.

We have always felt that our Guildsmen’s Wives were the forerunners of’ ‘The Ladies who lunch’ and no doubt each wife was carefully scrutinised about the exact state and cost of her dress and head gear.

The Dyer’s Wife is wearing blue to match her husband, but in her case the fabric is richly paterned and her large hat and wimple is worthy of Ladies Day at Ascot.

An Oxford Cleric, his horse was thinner than a rake,

And he ws not too fat, I undertake,

But had a hollow look, a sober stare;

The thread upon his overcoat was bare.

One of our personal favourites probably because of his very thin horse. The Oxford Cleric must surely be up to the minute as a debt-ridden student with all his money needed to pay for his course and his books.

Painted in a similar style to the lower clerical orders to differentiate him, we have used our soft Sherwood green for his main robe with a little earthy brown for his hood.

The Parson is we think, Chaucer’s most favourite character, together with his brother The Plowman he has nothing but good to say about him, remarking on his care and interest in all his parishioners whether rich or poor.

As one of the religious Pilgrims he is wearing a soft blue habit detailed with a broad leather belt and terracotta cowl.

This is a clean crisp piece showing off enticing goodies in her mixing bowl and the worktop behind her, combining to provide just the right splash of additional colour.

Like all the best food, the Rye Pastry Cook is enticing yet comforting at the same time.

A handsome chap, The Country Gardner has a host of wonderful detail but first mention must go to the incredible brushwork that goes into the hand-painting of the wooden fence behind him.

At his feet are a set of not-terribly-carefully-balanced pots, in a rich terracotta and a generous pile of something delicious, just freshly picked – Cauliflowers or Cabbages, you decide. He’s also clutching one to his chest giving the clear sense of pride every gardener recognises when the crop comes up good after all that work, represented in his other hand in the form of his hoe. We also particularly like his textured hat and leather chaps – this is serious work come rain or shine.

His prominent eyeballs never seemed to settle.

They glittered like the flames beneath a kettle:

He was a prelate fit for exhibition.

The Monk was the first wealthy religious figure we added to the Canterbury Tales Pilgrims,  this is clearly shown by his well caparisoned horse not to mention his elegantly beautiful hunting Hounds. The Hounds are often collected by non Chaucer fans as their timeless quality allows them to fit into any interior style, so do NB that they are sold separately to the Monk himself, but you can click this link if you’d like to see more of them.

Our decorators enjoyed the introduction of the Monk as his wealth allowed us to be a little more decorative, not least on the horses tack. Once more we have used the soft shades of Cobalt blue to great advantage plus a little hunting green for his hat.

The very swarthy Summoner, the unlikely partner to the flaxen haired young Pardoner, did pose some problems over his decoration, we had to keep him within character, but also he had to be a welcome addition to the Pilgrims collection.

He has a rather frivolous green wreath around his head to offset the bristly cheeks, plus a large tan bag to carry the money he was paid,  as well as a sword and a stout stick for protection when he delivered his summonses.

The Weaver’s Wife

They had the capital and revenue

Besides their wives declared it was their due.

We think that perhaps The Weaver’s Wife ay have been very new to Guild life as she cannot quite manage to hold her head up like the other wives, or perhaps she is being coy!

Maybe the proud look of the Weaver and his hat over awed her so she settled for a softly simple patterned blue gown and buckled belt with a demure coral wimple. Lady Edith or Edith Swan Neck £125

Lady Edith – Edith Swan Neck

Edith the Fair or Edith Swan Neck as she is often called, is one of the very few women thought to be depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry or to feature in the 1066 story at all for that matter. Thought to be Harold’s first and common law wife there are many myths and stories around this powerful Anglo Saxon woman.

Our Battle of Hastings Collection has been conceived to mirror the narrative style of the Bayeux Tapestry, telling the story of one of the country’s most famous battles through a series of figures and vignettes. The palette is also tightly controlled and focuses on colours similar to those in the Bayeux Tapestry itself, so comprises Chestnut Brown, Russet, soft Charcoal Grey, Dark Green, Coral and Black.

Newest in the 1066 Bayeux Tapestry Collection is Bishop Odo – former, some say tyrannical, Earl of Kent & Bishop of Bayeux, France.

Widely considered the most likely candidate to have commissioned the Tapestry, Odo was William’s half brother & a key strategist in the Battle itself. He later ruled England when William returned home to France.

The colour palette is designed to tie-in with the rest of the Series but there are decorative flourishes to add breadth & depth. In technical terms he’s one of the most complex & intricate pieces we’ve made, with almost 20 hand-made stages to bring him to life.

Introducing, Rye Pottery’s Prince Regent, or ‘Prinny’ as he was known!

Originally commissioned for his beloved Brighton Pavilion, we worked closely with them to create a truly Georgian figure that captured the essence of the famous Prince Regent who went on to become King George IV.

Inspired by images from the Rowlandson cartoon, The Prince of Wales along with his secret, and then illegal, Roman Catholic wife Mrs (Maria) Fitzherbert, are two of our most characterful pieces. Click here to see the wonderful Mrs Fitz.

We’re jolly pleased to be able to celebrate this extravagant, controversial but important artistic patron who has a particular affinity with Sussex. The painted detail on this piece is wonderful and the spirit of the original cartoons and the antics of the man himself are all captured in this striking but fun tribute. Its also a fabulous reflection of the sense of humour that we hope is present in all our work.

Mrs Maria Fitzherbert

Rye Pottery’s Mrs Maria Fitzherbert, the secret, and at the time illegal, Roman Catholic wife of the Prince Regent.

Inspired by images from the renowned Rowlandson cartoon, our figures depicting Mrs Fitzherbert and the Prince Regent were originally commissioned for the Brighton Pavilion,

These are two of our most colourful pieces and we’re particularly pleased to be able to celebrate this extravagant, controversial but important artistic patron and his partner who both have such strong connections with Sussex.

The painted detail on this piece is wonderful, not least her hair, the feathers of the decadent hat and her luxurious fur muff. The spirit of the original cartoons and reported antics of Mrs Fitz and her “Prinny” are all captured in this striking but fun tribute to one of Sussex’s most notorious couples. It’s also a fabulous reflection of the sense of humour ( we call it a lack of po face) that we hope is present in all our work.

Originally modelled by sculptor and ceramicist Neal French. Click here to see her partner the Prince Regent, who later went on to become King George IV.

The Rye Wedding £225

The Rye Wedding

This is arguably the most elegant piece in our naïve series of pastoral English figures.

As the doting groom gazes at his beautiful new wife, the Bride herself seems to be allowing herself to enjoy the moment, finally basking in the glow of her big day – it really is just as she’d always pictured it.

We also love the two sweet little bridesmaids, who have the slight air of two smalls who’ve managed to behave themselves ALL the way through the ceremony and are now anticipating the promised treat or bribe.

The palette here is soft, elegant and as co-ordinated as any carefully orchestrated 21st Century. The colours featured are Rye White, Dark Green, Flamingo Pink and London Stone.

Rye is a hugely popular marriage venue these days, and rightly so in our opinion – what could be more perfect than a Rye Wedding?

Mary & Joseph – The Nativity £300

Mary, Joseph & Child

The Nativity central scene – Mary & Joseph with their newborn baby.

This is our take on a classic collector’s piece – The Christmas Nativity and the great story of the birth of Jesus. A sensitive, simple and touching scene depicting two proud parents gazing down at their tiny child in wonder.

Joseph’s arm rests protectively around Mary’s shoulders, with a cosy blanket at the ready and a sheet at their feet to represent the stable. Mary’s beautiful robe and headdress show off our decorating team’s talents as the folds are delicately emphasised in both Cobalt and Delphinium Blue.

Rye Pottery’s Nativity has evolved over several years. The first of these ceramic figures was born when we asked sculptor/potter Gordon Davies to design a Mary & Joseph figure for our American customers. (We first collaborated with Gordon to produce our first Chaucer figure – The Wife of Bath for Canterbury Cathedral – read more here)

We later realised there was considerable interest in the idea back in England, so we persuaded Gordon to add the Three Wise Men or Kings and later three Shepherds to create what we feel is a charming and sensitive Nativity Collection. Some of collectors also enjoy adding additional animals, not least our Donkeys and Sheep here.

In 2000 a Rye Nativity set was taken to Bethlehem to mark the Millennium by Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Shepherds £225 ea

The Shepherds

The Rye take on the Shepherds in the Christmas story. These are popular figures alongside our English Animals collection but were original designed to offer a peaceful and calming addition to our sensitive central Nativity scene of Mary Joseph and Child.

As with the entirety of our Nativity Collection, these three are designed by Gordon Davies and also work well with some of our animal figures to produce a gentle country scene.

The Wise Men or Three Kings

A somewhat more colourful addition to our Nativity Collection for those who have the urge to add Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to their Nativity scene.

As with our Three Shepherds, these three gentle souls maintain the sense of peace and tranquility that exudes from the central figure of Mary & Joseph with their newborn child.

Designed by Gordon Davies, these three are available as a set but also sold separately.

Admiral Lord Nelson £225

Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson

A hand-made & painted ceramic figure of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, British Naval Commander and charismatic national hero. A unique gift for the naval history buff in your life.

Hand-painted using freehand brushwork the intricate detail on this figure of Admiral Nelson is one of the most time-consuming we make. The front of his uniform is quite some feat for our decorators to pull-off, but we hope it reflects quite how much Nelson loved his dress uniform and medals. We don’t make “flat back” figures so do take a look at the brandy barrel on the reverse of the figure, rumour has it that his body was stored in a brandy barrel after his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 to ensure its safe return to England for burial. Our Nelson even sports a hint at the famous eye injury he sustained during the capture of Corsica.

Widely regarded as the greatest officer in the history of the British Navy, this is a design that’s close to our heart. The now late Tarquin Cole attended Dartmouth Naval College in the 1950s and became a naval officer before moving into the world of Art & Design. He retained a life-long interest in the Navy & Military history and this figure was originally conceived and researched by him and then modelled by Neal French to mark the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 2005. We make this figure individually each and every time so there will always be slight differences in each piece, adding to the sense of uniqueness.

While we haven’t quite stretched to HMS Victory, we do also produce a companion figure for Nelson in the form of the Admiral’s beloved Lady Emma Hamilton. One of the great scandals of the age, this illicit love affair was much gossiped about during the late 1700’s and early 1800’s and eventually saw Nelson leaving his wife for his beloved Emma. Regular customers will know we quite often have a feminist bee in our bonnet so do consider reading up on this impressive woman.

Miss Simplicity from £60

Introducing Miss Simplicity, a fresh re-invention of one of Rye Pottery’s best-known and eagerly collected Mid-Century pieces.

Originally designed as an oil and vinegar bottle by our post-war co-founder Jack Cole, this piece has been out of formal production and the Rye Pottery Collection for decades.

Sporting a contemporary redesign for the 21st Century, Miss Simplicity now has her head fixed firmly in place, which in fact has been turned round  a full 180 degrees! (Don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt) We think her new stance, complete with fresh decoration give her an enchanting, if demure, demeanour.

Decorated individually using free-hand brush work & a Sgrafitto design we call Tracery, Miss Simplicity sports a beautiful textured white dress, & comes in 3 sizes and 4 colours:

Classic Cobalt Blue
Flamingo Pink
Fresh Paris Green
Sultry Black

We hope you like her!

Large £80 and 28.5cm high
Med £70 and 25cm high
Sm £60 and 22cm high

Returns

We love what we make and are tremendously proud of everything we produce. Please remember all our items are made entirely by humans and the principle of our business is that no two pieces are ever identical. The techniques we use means there will be variations in colour, finish and details as well as small imperfections in the glaze. Detailed quality checks are carried out on every individual piece and we work hard to make sure everything reaches you in tip top condition, wherever you are in the world.

We also welcome your general suggestions and feedback so that we can continue to make improvements and maintain our high standards.

If your order is not as you expected, please give us a call or drop us an email so we can sort it out as fast as possible. Telephone +44 (0)1797 223038.

Changing your mind

We will exchange or refund any item you are not happy with as long as the goods & packaging are returned safely in original condition within 14 days of receipt. Please call us first to discuss the problem.

We aren’t able to offer free returns and exchanges at the moment, which means you will have to pay for postage.

Damaged or Faulty Items

We can’t remember the last time we had a piece that was damaged in the post, so in the unlikely even that an item arrives damaged, or not as ordered, please inform us within 48 hours of delivery to discuss a replacement or refund.

We may ask you to take a photograph of the pottery and email it to us before you send anything back in the post.

The delivery charge and return postage will only be refunded if the item is agreed by us to be faulty.

Returning Items

To return an item for whatever reason, it needs to reach us in the same condition it reached you, so please pack carefully, using all of the original packaging. Ceramics need to be firmly surrounded by the packing material so that they can’t move and must not touch the sides of the box. Pieces need at least 2 inches of the packing material underneath them and at least 1 inch on top and around the sides. When you post the items, please ask for proof of postage from your post office (this is free of charge) or send it back via a signed-for service.

Any refunds agreed will be made to the card with which you made the purchase upon receipt of returned goods.

Sussex Pig – Black Lg £135 & Sm £95

Traditional Sussex Wedding Gift

A traditional quirky English wedding gift made exclusively by Rye Pottery and it’s forebears since the 1800s.

Also available in Blue & Pink

Our unusual but traditional figures stem from country weddings in the 1800s when a bride’s father was required to give all the guests a “Hogshead” (old measure) of ale.  The head serves as a cup and the body serves as a jug to toast the Happy Couple.

The detachable head and body are carefully sculpted by hand to fit snuggly together with a hand cut peg and hole whilst standing. Remove the head and it sits on its snout to form a cup while the body rests on its haunches and works as a jug.

The character of men and women from Sussex has been said to be like that of a pig – namely very stubborn and there’s an old English poem that sums up that exact sentiment.

“And you can pook
and you can shove
but a Sussex Pig
he wun’t be druv”

Made here in Rye for over 200 years our Sussex Pigs are held in museums around the world.

They are available in a choice of three colours (Blue, Pink & Black) and in two sizes, large and small. Ever popular at weddings, this is also a great option for traditional wedding anniversaries that suggest presents of pottery or china. Every one of our Sussex Pigs comes with a high quality little card explaining the history and origins of possibly one of the quirkiest English wedding traditions you will come across.

Rye Arts Festival commissioned independent visual arts filmmaker Alisdair Kitchen to make a short documentary about the Sussex Pig which you can watch if you click here.

Bespoke Designs

We’ve produced so many bespoke personalised ceramic pieces over the years it’s hard to imagine what our talented team haven’t managed to recreate.

These are detailed hand-made pieces, with all lettering and images created by our talented designers and decorators using freehand brush work. There’s nothing digital going on here – the skills involved are 100 per cent human!

Click on the image to the left and you can then scroll through just a taste of some of the pieces we’ve produced for a host of special occasions over the years. The most important thing we need from our customers is the lettering and an image you’d like us to work from. We’ll produce a draft digital design as a guide to the final piece and then it’s onto the trickier side of actually painting the actual pieces. These special bespoke commissions are painted “live” onto the plate so slight changes to the draft are guaranteed to happen.

Our one-off designs are produced in a single colour, most often our soft Cobalt Blue, but also our versatile black, to pull everyting together cleanly and ensure the look and feel of Rye Pottery is ever present. There are also boring technical reasons that we won’t go into. We do reserve the right to decline a commission if we don’t feel it will suit our technique or house style.

Prices below are for our standard designs, these bespoke designs incur an additional £85 design fee, depending on complexity.

Plates: Approx Diameter  10 in – £175

Bowls: Approx Diameter 10 in / 9 in / 6 in – £225 & £275

Mugs: Mugs available in child/coffee size from £50

Please contact us for more information or to discuss ideas and please do note  we work on a strict 6-8 week lead time on all of these pieces once a design is agreed and an order is confirmed.

Champion Pig £75 ea

And so to our show pigs!

This sweet figure of a very pleased, indeed a winning, pig comes in Classic Pink or Charcoal sponge.

We can’t help but think he’s looking up at his proud owner, whilst sporting that smart 1st prize rosette.

As with all our figures, these ceramic pigs are hand-made using traditional slip casting methods, with each piece then individually decorated by our team of talented paintresses. The rosette is a particulary tricky detail for them to get right, but it’s such an essential element on this figure, we hope you’ll agree it’s well worth the time and effort.

Billy & Nanny Goats £55 ea

The thing about goats is they always look so innocent, at least when they’re not chewing on something they shouldn’t. And we think our painting detail here captures exactly that butter wouldn’t melt moment.

Our Billy & Nanny are available in Classic London Stone with Coral Horns or a contemporary All White Textured Tracery colourway.

The All White Collection, which also includes our Sheep, Cows & Ducks, introduces texture into the final stage of decorating. Featuring a technique called Sgrafitto, our talented decorating team actually scratch the pattern of the coat into the glaze and then finish off faces and details with delicate touches of freehand brushwork using Black and soft Dark Brown.

Available exclusively from us both singly and as a pair and do note the depth of the dark brown on the white goats can vary so let us know if you need to see a photo before we send them off to you.

Rye Ducks from £40 ea

Originally modelled by Wally Cole MBE, the Rye Ducks are one of the ceramic animal figures Rye Pottery is best known for. Although … maybe they’re joint first with our Robins now we think about it!

Over the years both the large and small Ducks have been produced in a multitude of colours and patterns.

Right now we’re hand-decorating them in four different colourways, soft Delphinium Blue, Jade and London Stone as well as our all white textured Tracery decoration.

Sheep – Ram & Ewe in Stone £55 ea

The Ram & Ewe

This characterful pair come in two hand-painted colourways at the moment. First up is our classic and ever popular Swaledale featuring a sponged London Stone body, Black faces and hooves with a pair of intricate coral horns for the rather magnificent Ram.

More recently we’ve added an “All White” textured pair with soft, sponged brown faces and delicately textured body which we do by carefully scratching through the glaze.

We proud to say that we sell a lot of these to famers and small holders and they look wonderful above an aga or on a country kitchen dresser. The Ram & Ewe were originally modelled for Rye Pottery by renowned sculptor and ceramicist, Tony Bennett.

The Owls from £35

Our Rye Barn Owls are available as part of our All White Collection and also in classic Tawny.

These are unique hand-made British owls, all from an initial sculpture by our post-war founder Wally Cole MBE, and perfect for children and adults alike, not least Harry Potter fans.

The All White Ceramic Owls are perfect for the minimalist in your life, while the Tawny Owls add a touch more colour to our English countryside classic. Subtly tactile, each Owl is hand-made and then glazed, hand-painted and initialled to produce a smooth, wise old bird, whatever size you choose.

Rye Cats from £65

Rye Pottery Cats

Our Rye Cats come in large & small and in a multitude of colourways to boot.

This is our very individual take on an absolute Ceramic collectors’ classic. Hand-made and hand-painted each time by our highly skilled team of craftsmen and women.

These simple cats, while designed to work as a pair are not actually identical; each cat was originally modelled individually. These Cats work wonderfully as a single figure on a mantlepiece or windowsill, but they’re also great if you match big and small or display them as a classic “pair”.

Available in the following colours and sold individually or as pairs:

Black & White
London Stone
Indigo Blue
Classic Marmalade
Spring Daisy

Ewe & Lamb £86

The Rye Pottery Ewe & Lamb.

A subtle, very sculptural piece, this is a gentle portrayal of a moment that anyone who has anything to do with animals has witnessed many a dark lambing night. This is a snapshot of a mother and her baby; calm and at peace, all is right with the world.

This piece comes in two colour ways, as part of our All White Collection, with a textured white body and delicately sponged face, or classic London Stone with a sponged base in Leaf Green. The faces our talented paintresses add to this piece make a huge difference to the tone.

Originally modelled by scultor and ceramicist Tony Bennett.
